The Evolution of the Chandelier

Historically, chandeliers were reserved for royalty and the aristocracy, often found in grand halls and banquet rooms. Early designs were made of materials like iron or wood, with candles or oil lamps providing the light. As technology evolved, so did chandelier designs. The introduction of electricity opened up new possibilities, leading to the use of glass, crystal, and metal, allowing chandeliers to truly shine with intricate craftsmanship and dazzling reflections. Today, chandeliers can be for everyone not just the elite. As a designer, I specify ambient, task, and accent lighting within spaces to have options to control the feel and function of a room. You can try the same!

Choosing the Right Chandelier for Your Space

Selecting the perfect chandelier involves more than just picking something you like. Keep these two things in mind:

  1. Room Size and Proportion

A chandelier should be proportional to the size of the room and the space it will occupy. Here’s a simple rule of thumb for determining the ideal diameter:

  • Measure the length and width of your room (in feet).
  • Add the two measurements together. This sum gives you the ideal diameter of the chandelier in inches. For example, if your room is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide, the chandelier should be about 27 inches in diameter.

For rooms with higher ceilings, you may want a larger chandelier to make a statement.

      2. Light Effect + Output

  • Ambient Lighting: The chandelier can serve as the primary light source, filling the room with soft, diffused light. Clear crystal chandeliers often provide the brightest and most reflective light, creating a well-lit atmosphere.
  • Accent Lighting: Chandeliers with softer, more opaque glass or shades create a more intimate and mood-setting lighting. These chandeliers are designed to be added to rooms with can lighting and can be dimmed to add a layer of softness and relaxation.

White chandeliers are gaining popularity. Here are shop links to a few designer looking ones.
